If you’re looking for something fun to do in Burlington, NC, you certainly don’t have to look far. From an old railroad station to a carousel, area lakes to baseball, there’s plenty to see, do and explore in Burlington. 

Paramount Theater

With nearly 100 years of history, the Paramount has been restored to its old glory, and now is used for events, concerts, musicals and more. The theater can comfortably seat close to 400 people. 

The Depot

Round right in the central business district, The Depot was once the starting and ending point for train travelers. Originally built in the mid 1800s, the site is now used for outdoor concerts and special events. An old caboose sits behind The Depot and is open to the public during certain hours. 

Minor League baseball

Burlington also has its own Minor League baseball team. The Burlington Sock Puppets play in the Burlington Athletic Stadium at Fairchild Park. As a summer collegiate baseball team of the Appalachian League, the Sock Puppets typically play from mid-June through late August. Film buffs are sure to appreciate that the old-time ballpark was featured in the movie Bull Durham. 

Dentzel Carousel

Built around the turn-of-the-century, the newly renovated Dentzel Carousel in City Park was purchased in the late 1940s from another park in Ohio. The carousel features 46 hand-carved animals that are said to be especially realistic. Each year the city celebrates the attraction with the Carousel Festival, which includes food vendors, a kid’s zone, live music and more. 

Area lakes

If you want somewhere to cool off, head to one of the area lakes. Three lakes are part of The City of Burlington Recreation & Parks department, including Lake Mackintosh, where kayaks and john boats are available to rent. Just north of Burlington, the Lake Cammack Park & Marina is a good place for boating, fishing, paddling and wildlife viewing. You’ll find a fishing pier, playground, a two-mile hiking trail and some boat ramps at Lake Cammack. 

Cedarock Park

Speaking of the outdoors, Cedarock Park is a fun place for hiking, horseback riding and disc golf, and it’s not far from Burlington. The 500-acre park also has some ponds and waterfalls, plus canoe rentals, campgrounds, and picnic tables.

Textile Heritage Museum

It may not be large, but the Textile Heritage Museum showcases the history of the textile industry in Burlington. The free museum has cloth that was made for the US military during WWI. It’s free to visit. 

Alamance County Historical Museum

4777 South, NC-62, Burlington, NC 27215 | Website

You can also step back in history at the Alamance County Historical Museum. Spread across 1,700 acres, the museum is part of a late 1700s-era grain plantation. 

Animal Park at the Conservators Center

676 E Hughes Mill Rd, Burlington, NC 27217 | Website

If you want to see big cats up close, head to the Animal Park at the Conservators Center in Burlington. The center is home to mountain lions, lynxes, tigers, and cougars. The site is open for public tours on the weekends.
