North Carolina’s Triangle Area traditionally gets a lot of attention for its universities and its high-tech businesses, but it’s the holiday season that’s top of mind for many right now. The season is going strong in The Triangle, with plenty of activities for those of all ages to enjoy. 

Magic of Lights

You don’t even have to get out of your own car to enjoy Magic of Lights in Raleigh. This is a drive-through holiday lights experience at Coastal Credit Union Music Park. You can buy tickets in advance on-line or at the gate. Special nightly events include Ugly Sweater Night, Santa photos, and even photos with The Grinch, depending on the night you choose. Magic of Lights runs in the evenings through late December. 

Chapel Hill Community Parade, Arts Market, & Tree Lighting

To officially mark the start of the holiday season in Chapel Hill, make plans to attend the annual Chapel-Hill Carrboro Community Parade in early December. The parade starts in Chapel Hill and ends at Carrboro Town Hall the morning of December 3. After the parade, head to Ackland Art Museum for the Holiday Arts Market to commemorate the busy holiday shopping season. Finish off a fun day filled with holiday cheer at the Tree Lighting in Southern Village.

Christmas by Candlelight

Come out for live music, singing, dancing, and holiday cookies at Christmas by Candlelight at the Duke Homestead in Durham. Costumed guides lead visitors through the historic area by candlelight, allowing participants to see what it might have been like to celebrate a Victorian Christmas in the 1800s. Tours groups are limited, and tickets can be purchased in advance, on-line. 

THE RINK

If you want to go for a spin on the ice, you can do that too with the outside skating rink at Red Hat Amphitheater in Downtown Raleigh. THE RINK touts itself as a natural ice-skating rink where you can take in views of the city skyline, curl up in a cozy station and around a fire pit, or simply enjoy some games and the snack bar. THE RINK is open through mid-January. 

Holiday Extravaganza

Durham, NC - More info

A Holiday Extravaganza is planned for mid-December at Durham Central Park. The event includes a holiday vendor market, ornament decorating, food trucks, and photos with Santa. While you’re there, you can choose a glass of hot apple cider, or adults can choose from craft beer and mulled wine. 

Winter Wonderland with Goats

Chapel Hill, NC - More info

For a more unique holiday event, make time for Winter Wonderland with Goats at Spring Haven Farm. This holiday event runs through the end of December. Guests can ride on a Polar Express Tractor Train, enjoy some hot cocoa, and visit Santa’s Workshop for ornament making. The highlight of the event, though, is visiting some of the farm’s goats.
