Halloween is almost here, and that means people all over the Triangle area are looking for fun events to kick off the spooky holiday. From family-friendly locations to those geared towards grownups, we’ve found some of the best Halloween events of the year.
Pumpkin Patch Express - October 1-30 (select days)

Bring the entire family to the Pumpkin Patch Express at the Museum of Life + Science in Durham. The fun runs every weekend through the end of October. You do need to pre-register for tickets, but you can do it online. The weekend includes a train ride to the pumpkin patch to pick out your own pumpkin, nature bingo, a hay maze, duck races, and more.

Movies in the Garden - October 6

Even the little ones will probably enjoy Movies in the Garden with a Halloween twist. The Raleigh Little Theater is putting on a special showing of Hocus Pocus in early October. The evening movie will have some food trucks available, or you can bring your own picnic. Tickets are “pay what you want”, starting at just $1.

Witch’s Haunted Barn - Saturdays in October

Just to the north of Chapel Hill, Hillsborough is the place to go for The Witch’s Haunted Barn. Held at Firefly Farm in Hillsborough, the event is low on the “scare level”, so it’s perfect for those with younger kids. Because it’s a barn, you’ll also probably see some chickens, donkeys, and horses during your visit. Be sure to wear your costume. You can purchase tickets ahead of time online.

Haunted History Tours - October & November (select nights)

If you enjoy a good ghost story, why not come along on a Haunted History Walking Tour in Raleigh. Put on by Raleigh Walking Tours, the event runs on select nights during the months of October and November. The spooky tour starts outside the Governor’s Mansion, then passes by city landmarks where the guide teaches participants about some actual local history, mixed in with some haunting stories.

Track or Treat Halloween Express - Saturdays October 15-29

Just to the Southwest of Raleigh in New Hill is where you’ll find the Track or Treat Halloween Express. The train ride occurs on select Saturdays in October, and you can choose your departure time. Advance tickets are going fast for this fun Halloween event.

Zombiepalooza - October 28

The end of the month finishes strong with Zombiepalooza at The Cary Theater in Cary. This free event showcases zombie films made by teens and adults in the local community. The zombie short films will all be shown indoors, and costumes are encouraged.

If you’re not too spooked by the venue, consider a pre-Halloween tour at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham. This guided tour is led by those with Preservation Durham. You may even learn about a murder mystery during your visit.
